DON'T BELIEVE THE NEWSPAPERS THEY FOOL MOST OF THE PEOPLE, MOST OF THE TIME The London Times ran a story yesterday 01/02/01 that is certain to be publicized by the marketing geniuses employed in America's dairy industry. HEADLINE: Maasai Milk Link to Healthy Hearts, by Nigel Hawkes, Health Editor Hawkes writes: "The milk-drinking diet of Maasai tribesmen in East Africa, who drink huge quantities of milk but remain almost immune to heart disease, could be the inspiration for a theory that could turn the dairy industry upside down." The diets of the Maasai were investigated and given credit for low heart disease rates. Maasai drink milk...and plenty of it. However, Maasai do not own refrigerators. Milk spoils and kills Maasai long before they have an opportunity to die from heart complications. In attempting to keep the milk from spoiling, the Maasai ferment the beverage with two not-so appetizing substances: blood drawn from the necks of their cattle, and feces. The fermentation process allows bacteria to digest lactose. Will one have to drink milk with blood and feces to prevent heart disease? Not at all! There is a serious flaw in this story. Maasai live in Kenya and Tanzania. The life expectancy of a male in Kenya is 46.5 years, according to the World Almanac. It gets worse in Tanzania, where the average male is expected to live just 43.85 years. To suggest that these milk drinking people are healthy, is to deceive and lie. So, Maasai don't dies of heart disease. They should only live that long! Oh, yes. African people experience little or no episodes of osteoporosis. The one exception are the milk-drinking Maasai.
