My Number-One Valentine's Day Fantasy
On this Valentine's Day, allow me to share my secret thoughts with you regarding the number one fantasy of my life. I plan to get wet, wear next-to-no clothes, ride hard, and then run for the hills. Last year, Jon Reik did it in just over 76 minutes. Of course, he is only 23-years-old, and has a bit more stamina than I. When you pass age 50, it takes a little longer to perform. Gary Rodebaugh did it in just over 80 minutes, while it took Maurice Mahoney over 2 hours. I've just mailed the application in for my first triathlon event, to be held in Branford, Connecticut. I've never even run a race, so this should be quite interesting. It's not the classic "Ironman Triathlon," in which competitors swim 2.3 miles, bike 110 miles, then finish by running a 26.2 mile marathon. No, this is a mini-triathlon, but at this time last year just the concept of swimming one- half mile, then pedaling 13.5 miles on a bicycle, followed by a four-mile gallop to the finish would have killed me. The Connecticut event takes place seven months from now. http://www.race-productions.com/hammerfestinfo.html I figure that I'll be able to swim the half-mile in about 20 minutes. Add 45 hard minutes for the bike leg. I'll then run the 4 miles in 35 minutes. How is that for a prediction, seven months before the fact? My goal? One hundred minutes or less of intense physical discomfort. Of course, we produce endorphins, or so I am told. You know what they say? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Yes, my insurance is paid up. Wish me luck.
